Origin of The Purple Collective

col·lec·tive  \kə-ˈlek-tiv\   adj. done by people acting as a group; of, relating to, or being a group of individuals; involving all members of a group as distinct from its individuals  n. denoting a number of persons or things considered as one group or whole

I’ve thought of and referred to us Prince fams as The Purple Collective for many, many years now.  As I started to move forward with this project, I knew it was the perfect moniker for what I’m trying to achieve with it.

Names like Purple Army have been used lot, but it sends a different message than what Humans of The Purple Collective is about.  He wasn’t a man in favor of war anyway, I can think of at least 6 songs right off the fly demonstrating that, so using a militaristic term was a no-go.  Names like New Power Generation, Rainbow Children, Purple Hippies, or others… those were his, and like Mikey leaving One-Eyed Willie’s share just for him out of deep respect, they are off limits as far as I’m concerned.

“Collective” matches the vibe of  who we are as fams:  a group made up of all different ethnicities, religions, age groups, geographic areas, economic class, ability, etc.… just a great big mashup of folks, collectively coming together because of our love for the man himself, the music, and the message.  "Collective" matches what we do:  We bleed purple.  We talk all kinds of subjects: lyrics, songs, concepts, artwork, creativity, musicianship, production, technical stuff, music business, love, spirituality, theology, collection, art/creations, there are no boxes drawn, which is a mirror image of what we learned from him.  "Collective" matches this project: a collection of a variety of stories from everyone who's life Prince touched in some way.

The Purple Collective just fits, by definition, by function, by vibe.  The synergy of purple people, put simply, is awesome!
